At The Cheese Gallery we take pride in everything we do, but one of our favourite menu items has got to be our cheese and charcuterie boards. While we love that we are able to prepare them for you, check out these easy tips for preparing your very own boards at home…using our wide array of cheese, crackers, and accompaniments of course!
The main (and often tastiest) component to a cheese board is obviously CHEESE! The perfect cheese board features at least one type of soft, semi-soft, and hard cheese. Having this variety allows for a good balance of textures and flavours which will be sure to please you and whomever you’re serving. A good soft cheese like Brie is our usual go-to, mostly for its creamy and rich mildness. In the semi-soft department, we like going for a Gorgonzola because its mix of cow and sheep’s milk brings colour, flavour and a smooth texture that will pair well with our candied nuts and fruit. We definitely enjoy seeing aged cheddar on our boards when we select a hard cheese. It’s a crowd pleaser and pairs well with crackers, nuts, and fruits as well.
The grains on your cheeseboard should bring a similar amount of variety and diversity to the table. Make sure whatever products you choose (and we’ve got you covered on all fronts) are sturdy because they will essentially be acting as your utensils. The biggest tip we can give you about the grains is to keep it simple. You don’t want to take away from the main event! We love using baked baguette and water crackers; the subtleness of them really allow for the flavours in the cheese to shine through.
Fruit is a staple item on cheese boards, but it’s also good to mix it up with some local preserves as well. With your accompaniments, you want to ensure you’re offering something fresh, something sweet, and something crunchy. We typically use fresh apple on our boards, coupled with some sweet preserves and honey, topped off with crunchy spicy pecans for some added zest!
So now you know how to create a basic, delicious cheeseboard sure to make all your friends, family, and house guests jealous. Or…just pop into The Cheese Gallery and let us do it for you!
